What this is

Making the name lead to your site

You have bought the name. One setting needs changing so that typing it takes people to your site. That is the whole job.

There are three ways to do it. The quick way takes you about two minutes and then it is done for good. Or you invite us in and we do it for you. Or you own the lot and we work inside your own account.

The name stays yours. It is registered to you, on your card, in your account. Nothing on this page changes that, and nothing here lets us take it.

Routes one and two mean we look after the site for you. In both of those, the site itself keeps running on our setup rather than yours. That is deliberate: nothing for you to set up, nothing to keep an eye on, and nobody to ring when something needs changing except us. Route three is the opposite and puts everything in your name from the start.

There is nothing more to pay, on any of the three. You are only ever paying for the name.

And you are not locked in. Start on one and change your mind later and we will move it across for you at no charge.

01The quick way

Paste in two lines

Our recommendation

We send you two lines of text. You paste them into one screen at GoDaddy. That is it.

  1. Send us the name you bought. We check one thing first, then send you the two lines. Please wait for them rather than starting without us.
  2. Sign in at godaddy.com and open My Products, then your Domain Portfolio.
  3. Click the name to open its settings.
  4. Click DNS, then Nameservers.
  5. Choose I’ll use my own nameservers and paste in the two lines we sent, replacing anything already there. Copy and paste rather than typing. One wrong character and it will not work.
  6. Click Save, then Continue. GoDaddy may text you a code or email you a password to check it is really you. That is normal.

Then you are finished. It can take an hour, occasionally a day, for the change to reach everyone. Nothing is broken while it does. We will tell you when it is live.

Why step one matters. There is one security setting that can take a name offline if it is switched on while you make this change. We check it for you, which is why we ask you to send us the name before you start. It is the only thing that can go wrong and we handle it.

Those two lines come from our setup, which is where the site lives and where we look after it for you. If you would rather the whole thing sat in your own name from the start, say so and we will set it up that way instead, at no extra cost. And if you would rather change your mind about it later, that is fine too. We will move it across whenever you ask.

Invite us in

If you would rather not go into the settings at all, GoDaddy lets you invite someone into your account without giving them your password. You invite us, and we do the rest.

  1. Go to account.godaddy.com/access and sign in.
  2. Under People who can access my account, click Invite to Access.
  3. Enter our name and the email address we give you.
  4. Choose Domains Only. The narrowest option. It is all we need.
  5. Click Invite.

What that lets us do

  • Make the name lead to your site
  • Set up any extra addresses you want
  • Keep the name locked and renewing

What it never lets us do

  • See or change your password
  • See or add your card details
  • See what else you have bought
  • Let anyone else in
  • Move the name away from you

To take it back, go to the same page and remove us. It stops immediately.

03Or

Own the lot

If you would rather everything sat in your own name from the very first day, it can. You set up the account, we work inside it, and nothing about the site is ours.

Do not buy hosting. You do not need any, and somebody will happily sell you a monthly one. Your site is six files. It costs nothing at all to run, and the account below is free and stays free.

  1. Create a free account at cloudflare.com. Sign up, then click the link in the email they send you.
  2. Sign in, go to Domains, and choose Onboard a domain.
  3. Type in the name you bought and choose the Free plan.
  4. Cloudflare will show you two lines of text. Put them into GoDaddy using the six steps in the quick way above.
  5. Go to Members, click Invite, and enter the email address we give you. It will ask you to pick what we are allowed to do. Tell us and we will give you the exact wording to choose, so you are not guessing.
  6. Let us know, and we will put the site in.

What is different about this one. It is your account, so if something ever needs a click at an awkward hour, it has to come from you or from an invitation you have already sent us. That is the trade for owning it outright.

What is the same. Same site, same speed, same nothing to pay. And you can remove us from the account at any time, from the same Members page.
